Living with HIV and HPV: Good-practice models for HPV-related cancer elimination

Sinead Delany-Moretlwe is a Research Professor and Director of Research at the Reproductive Health and HIV Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa. She is also a co-chair of our event today. Her research interests span the intersections between sexual and reproductive health and infectious diseases, particularly in adolescent girls and young women. She has worked on several Phase III trials of new HIV prevention technologies. She has also led several studies to optimize oral PrEP use in adolescent girls and young women, as well as studies to evaluate HPV screening and vaccination approaches for populations living with HIV.

Nelly Mugo is a reproductive health specialist. She leads a clinical trial site in Thika, Kenya and conducts research on HIV and cervical cancer prevention with a focus on PrEP and HIV vaccines. She is the protocol co-chair for the Kenya HPV single dose vaccine study (KEN-SHE). The interim results of the KEN-SHE trial informed the WHO change of recommendations for HPV vaccination for girls. Today, she will be sharing via a pre-recorded video the latest evidence related to single dose efficacy,

Marion Saville is the Executive Director of the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer. Marion is interested in how culturally safe screening can meet the needs of disadvantaged groups who have poorer cancer outcomes, in Australia and New Zealand. She has also focused on research and implementation projects demonstrating that it is possible to deliver high quality, acceptable cervical screening in a range of resource poor settings, collaborating with investigators in Malaysia, leading to the establishment of the ROSE Foundation. She will present today on person-centred care approaches for HPV testing and task shifting opportunities.

Andrew Vallely is a clinical epidemiologist at the Kirby Institute UNSW and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research with 28 years’ experience in global health. He led world-first field trials of point-of-care HPV self-collect, test-and-treat for cervical screening, and now jointly leads the Eliminate Cervical Cancer across the Western Pacific Program to advance elimination in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and the region.

Éric Fleutelot is Technical Director of the ‘Major Pandemics’ cluster of Expertise France. He has extensive experience in community health, grant and programme management. He also manages the SUCCESS programme, for secondary prevention of cervical cancer in 4 countries, supported by Unitaid.

Lance Osiro is a dedicated public health professional from Nairobi, Kenya with over 12 years of experience in reproductive, maternal and child health initiatives. He is currently working as the programme manager for non-communicable diseases at the Clinton Health Access Initiative. He is committed to enhancing and improving access to healthcare by foster collaboration with governments and hopes to inspire future healthcare professionals.

Becca Nowak is an infectious disease epidemiologist focused on HIV and human papillomavirus infections among sexual and gender minorities in Nigeria. She conducted an anal cancer screening feasibility study nested in a sexual and gender minority friendly HIV care facility and is currently using implementation science to promote cancer prevention with efficacy and sustainability.

Mary Poynten is a clinical epidemiologist at the Kirby Institute, University of New South Wales in Australia. She was project leader of the study of anal cancer prevention – a large cohort study of the natural history of anal HPV and disease in gay and bisexual men. She is now leading several anal cancer screening trials.
